The Batman film series refer to six superhero films based on the DC Comics character of the same name, all of which have been financed and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. The first series of films, directed by Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher, was released between 1989 and 1997, consisting of Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. After the critical failure of Batman and Robin, the franchise was rebooted in 2005 with a new series of films that presently consists of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, both directed by Christopher Nolan.

Fifty years after Batman's debut as a comic strip in 1939, Warner Bros. turned the theme into a major motion picture with a $27M budget. The first film was produced at the Pinewood Studios outside London, which provided spacious soundstages and a 95 acre backlot for the creation of an ambitiously complex city set. Eventually the 400 m long set became the most expensive outdoor set built in Europe since Cleopatra. Created in an astonishingly short time it is also one of the most compelling urban visions in the history of filmmaking.

Design has been very important in all the batman movies. besides the regular bat gadgets, which required top class designers to contribute, the very architecture of the Gotham city has been very important as it not only portrays a city that is unnatural and not seen anywhere yet one can recognize, but also the set acts as a metaphore of the inheritors as well as, to prove the future of the villains.
